The original producing area of Dahongmei is Fujian Province. In the early days, it was circulated in many places, such as Mr. Wu on Xinghua Road, Shengping District, Shantou (at that time Mr. Wu called it Dawumei), Mr. Xiao Du of Puning, and so on. This variety has semi-pendant leaves with bridge angles, contracted leaf bases, and medium-sized pseudobulbs. The flowers are large and rise above the leaves, with buds arranged in order, mostly with five petals separated into segments, and occasionally with split heads and joined backs. The outer petals are round-headed with finely contracted bases, and the lip is rolled. The bloom form has slight elasticity, and it is currently the best soft-petal plum-petal among the new and old varieties of Cymbidium sinense. Many years ago, I once named it Lingdong Damei, meaning that it could be compared with Lingnan Damei. In the spring of 2006, when Mr. Lin Zhongxian of Chencun came to Chaoshan to purchase Tieshan Hongmei, he came to my home and saw it, saying that this was the variety he called Dahongmei. Out of respect for Mr. Lin, it is therefore no longer called Lingdong Damei. These are the blooms from my plants over the past few years.
