An introduction to the main characteristics of the Lingqiao Lotus-Petal Huilan (Cymbidium faberi 'Lingqiao He')

This lotus-petal orchid was collected in the wild in April 2008 at Dahong Mountain in Suizhou by a local orchid farmer, with three shoots of grass and one stalk of flowers. It flowered again in March 2009 and was immediately purchased at a high price by Chutian Lanhui Garden (Wuhan) for exclusive collection, and only five specimens now survive. This lotus-petal flower is of excellent quality and has great ornamental and collection value. Because this flower closely resembles the precious new wild Huilan variety named and cultivated by this orchid garden in 2008, Lingqiao Mei: nimble and light, elegant and free-spirited. It was therefore named "Lingqiao He" (abbreviated as "Qiao He," also called "Fengqiao He") and classified under the [Lingqiao Jinzun Series], forming "sister flowers" with Lingqiao Mei and Lingqiao Xian, becoming yet another orchid treasure of Chutian Orchid Garden and one of its "treasures of the garden."
This lotus-petal orchid belongs to the green Huilan lotus-petal type, with green stalks and green flowers. The leaves are 60 to 70 cm long and 0.6 to 0.8 cm wide, with sharp leaf tips, medium-coarse serrations, and leaf veins that are relatively fine, deep, and translucent; the leaf texture is thick and glutinous, with a semi-arching leaf posture, and the leaves have a flowing, dynamic feel. The emerald-green lamp-wick stalk rises above the leaves; the flower stem buds, scape, and pedicels are tender green, the small pedicels are slender, and when it flowers again it carries nine blossoms; a fragrant breeze brushes the face, captivating the soul. The flowers are well spaced, each one uniform, and arranged excellently. Four or five days after the buds open, the flower shape is already fixed, and it remains unchanged after a long time in bloom, standing gracefully and elegantly.
The inner and outer whorls of this lotus-petal flower are extremely natural and harmonious, blending into one whole; the elegant flowers and leaves complement each other and enhance each other's charm. The three outer petals have slender bases and large flared corners in a lotus shape, with pointed tips at the petal ends and edges slightly rolled inward, and the three outer petals naturally lean forward in an embracing posture; the leaf sheaths are relatively thick and tightly clasp the leaf stalks, and the petal texture is thick and glutinous. The sepals, like those of Lingqiao Mei, seem soft yet firm, possessing great "bone strength" without losing a flowing, dynamic feel; the shoulders are level, the petals are clam-shell-shaped, the large liu-hai tongue is thick, short and small, and the red spots on the tongue are brilliant. The flower holds extremely well, the central column is perfectly round, the lip is round, neat, tight, and upright without curling, and the column is small and exquisite, with clear spirit, ample charm, and dignified beauty.
Appreciating this flower from aesthetic principles: the petals divide evenly "into three" from the center, spreading outward and forward, and the top point of the petals (the main petal) exactly connects with the top points on both sides (the two side petals) to form an equilateral triangle with a sense of balanced symmetry, as steady as Mount Tai - standing like a pine, sitting like a bell, walking like the wind. This is also the highest realm that orchid lovers and admirers should pursue. If a circle is drawn from this, it resembles a large circle, exactly echoing the charming small circle of the central column from afar, harmonious and beautiful, beauty shared by all. Judging this lotus-petal orchid strictly by the elements of a standard petal-type flower - "form, color, posture, charm, spirit, and fragrance": its beauty lies in its emerald green, its goodness in its uprightness; its mystery lies in the petal tips, its cleverness in the embracing posture; separate outside and joined within, form broken but meaning connected; loose outside and tight within, inside and outside responding to each other; its difficulty lies in roundness and moisture, its importance in elegance; its rarity lies in delicacy, its value in spiritual vitality; stability contains change, and change hides stability, truly achieving an excellent aesthetic posture and extraordinary temperament of great variety and balance - elegant yet steady and noble, dignified yet light and beautiful, quietly refined yet splendid and alluring, delicately fragrant yet deeply and purely sweet.
The sudden emergence of Lingqiao He can be called a representative superior variety of Huilan lotus-petal type, and it was truly not easy to achieve! No wonder so many people desire it, yet it remains beyond reach!
