Piaoyanghe is a lotus-petal variety among the lotus-petal orchids (Cymbidium lianpan).
In the exhibition hall, a small flag was placed in each flower selected by the Japanese orchid enthusiasts. The selected flowers included; Hezhiguan, Piaoyanghe, Yingshanhong and more than a dozen other pots. Later, during price negotiations, not all of them were sold due to price and other reasons. Piaoyanghe was sold at 5,000 yuan per seedling, with 2 seedlings sold. At that time, that was an astronomical price! This was the earliest famous variety from Baoshan to cross the ocean and be introduced to Japan...
Piaoyanghe originates from Baoshan, Yunnan, and was collected and cultivated by Mr. Fang Yong in 1992 from within the territory of Baoshan, Yunnan. In 1997, Sekiguchi Shinichi of the Japan Okuchi Orchid Association saw this flower and could not put it down. He transplanted it to Japan at 5,000 yuan per seedling, making it an orchid envoy of China-Japan cultural exchange, and Mr. Yang Shushang gladly named it "Piaoyanghe". On September 12, 2001, Mr. Yang Jianming and Mr. Yang Shushang registered it. In 2003, it won the Gold Award at the 13th China (Dali, Yunnan) Orchid Expo, and in 2003 it won the Special Gold Award at the 3rd Yunnan Province (Baoshan) Orchid Expo (only 2 Special Gold Awards were set). In 2006, it won the Gold Award again at the 6th Yunnan Province (Lijiang) Orchid Expo.
Characteristics: This variety has broad, thick leaves that are semi-arching and drooping, with an elegant leaf posture. One stem produces 3 to 5 flowers, and the flowers rise above the leaves. The petals are all light red fleshy petals, with silkworm-moth-held petals and a large ruyi tongue. The petals continue to extend wider as they open, and the flower shape is dignified and grand. It is a hard-to-find standard lotus-petal variety.
