Spring shoots appear after two to three weeks of days with maximum temperatures above 20 degrees. In fact, the spring shoots have already differentiated as early as winter. Flower shoots differentiate when temperatures are 15-25 degrees, but they only appear after temperatures rise above 25 degrees and stay there for two weeks. In Guangdong, 'Xiao Tao Hong' mostly has flower shoots by the end of April. In the north, flower shoots appear in June. Then, after the maximum temperature drops to 25 degrees, flower shoots basically stop growing.

Autumn shoots. In the north, most plants produce no autumn shoots. In the south, autumn shoots appear in the two weeks after National Day. In Guangdong, autumn shoots are easiest to produce, and they can basically appear at any time from National Day to the Spring Festival.

In the north, start repotting when temperatures rise back to 18 degrees for two weeks, which helps produce more leaf shoots. In Guangdong, dividing and repotting around the start of the school term in September makes it easiest to produce more leaf shoots. Then the following year, more spring shoots will emerge.   If you repot and divide in the Spring Festival period, it is easy to get spring shoots, but not easy to get autumn shoots.  The prerequisite for producing more shoots is that the plants must be robust. A 'Xiao Tao Hong' with 6 leaves and a large pseudobulb counts as a robust plant.
