Introduction and Appreciation of the Cymbidium goeringii Cultivar Wantai Mei
Wantai Mei: a new plum-petal cultivar of Cymbidium goeringii (spring orchid), a treasured selection by Mr. Zhou Dawei of Xiaoshan, Zhejiang. Some orchid enthusiasts have said that the beauty and value of Wantai can only be truly appreciated by those who have seen the actual flowers. Some orchid enthusiasts have said that the beauty and value of Wantai can only be truly appreciated by those who have seen the actual flowers. This year I was fortunate enough to behold two blooms opening together, a truly breathtaking sight. The flower form is well-proportioned, the flower color is emerald green, the central structure is neatly arranged, the outer petals are elegant and flowing, and the stem is tall and straight, remaining unchanged even after being open for a long time. What is most remarkable is that not only the flowers are worth admiring, but even the flower stem shows rich color variation, and may even develop toad-skin texture, adding a touch of interest. I love Wantai Mei's color, its tall slender stem, and its lively, gracefully floating form. The drawback is that most floating-type flowers have their petals curl backward after being open for a long time.
