Introduction to the Characteristics of the Tianchi Pink Lotus Cymbidium Variety

Tianchi Pink Lotus, a Cymbidium lianpan variety, is named for its pink color, lotus-shaped petals, and cultivation at Tianchi Orchid Garden. It was initially called Pink Lotus-shaped Lianpan. It originates from the deep valley of the Pijiang River, a tributary of the Lancang River in Yunlong, western Yunnan. In 1995, Wang Shuming, the owner of Yunlong Tianchi Orchid Garden and a skilled orchid connoisseur, discovered and purchased it at the Shimen Orchid Market for cultivation. Yunlong is located in the Lancang River basin, with high mountains and dense forests, and is a major producing area for Cymbidium lianpan. Wang Shuming, originally from Sichuan and later settled in Yunlong, spent years collecting, conserving, and developing orchids. He established Tianchi Orchid Garden in Shiliu Town, cultivating over ten thousand orchid seedlings. With many plain-flowered, petal-expanded flowering, and rare-flowered specimens, Tianchi Orchid Garden has become a selection bank for wild orchids in the hinterland of western Yunnan.

Leaves are about 1 cm wide and over 60 cm long. The leaves are slanted upright, with the upper part bending and drooping. The leaf color is dark green, with thick and prominent veins. New shoots emerge white-red, thick and round. It blooms in spring, with 2 to 3 flowers per scape. The petals are lotus-shaped, broad and round in the middle, with a slightly cupped tip and tightly clasped base. The flower color is light red and vivid, with light red and clear veins. The petals are exceptionally broad, with 9 filamentous lines, like a rainbow appearing. The entire flower is broad, thick, and dignified, showing red within white and white within red, suitable for both heavy and light makeup, giving a feeling of hidden beauty in a deep valley.
