Fine, sunny weather in many parts of northern China helps speed up wheat harvest progress
The wheat harvest has advanced from the southwest northward to northern Henan and southern Shandong. More than 45% of the national winter wheat has been harvested, and winter wheat in northern China is at the peak of harvest. From June 5-8, most of the northern wheat harvest areas had fine weather conducive to winter wheat maturation, harvest and drying; most of the winter wheat areas in northwest and north China had suitable water and heat conditions, conducive to winter wheat grain filling. It is expected that from June 10-12, the northern winter wheat areas will be dominated by fine weather, conducive to winter wheat grain filling, maturation, harvest and drying.
I. Progress of summer harvest and summer planting
Summer harvest progress: At present, the wheat harvest has advanced from the southwest northward to northern Henan and southern Shandong. As of June 8, more than 45% of the national winter wheat has been harvested. Among this, more than 70% of winter wheat in Henan has been harvested, more than 80% in Anhui, more than 40% in Jiangsu, 30% in Shaanxi, nearly 20% in Shandong, less than 10% in Hebei, and harvesting has begun in western southern Xinjiang. The northeastern Huang-Huai region, most of north China, and most of the northwest region have not yet reached maturity for harvest.
It is expected that from June 10-12, winter wheat in northern Xinjiang, central Gansu Longzhong and southern Ningxia will still be in the heading and grain filling stage; winter wheat in southern Xinjiang, eastern Gansu Longdong, southern northern Shaanxi, northern Hebei, most of Beijing and Tianjin, central Shanxi and the Shandong Peninsula will be in the milk-ripe stage; winter wheat in Shaanxi Guanzhong, southern Gansu Longnan, central and southern Hebei, southern Shanxi, most of Shandong, northwestern Henan, northern Jiangsu and northeastern Anhui will be in the maturity and harvest stage.
Summer planting progress: As of June 8, more than 40% of single-season rice in Anhui has been transplanted, and less than 10% in Jiangsu; more than 30% of rice in Shanghai has been sown. Less than 10% of summer corn in Shandong has been sown. Summer planting in most of the southwest region and most of Jianghan has been basically completed.
II. Impact of weather from June 5-8 on summer harvest
The weather in the northern wheat harvest areas was fine, and the wheat harvest progressed smoothly. From June 5-8, most of the Huang-Huai region, the southeastern part of the northwest region, and the northern part of the Jianghuai region were dominated by fine weather, conducive to the development of mechanized summer harvest operations, and the wheat harvest progressed smoothly and at an accelerated pace.
Most of the winter wheat areas in the northwest and north China had suitable light, temperature and water, conducive to wheat grain filling. From June 5-8, most of the winter wheat areas in the northwest and north China were dominated by fine weather or scattered rainfall, with suitable light and temperature and mostly good soil moisture. Among this, light rain occurred in parts of northern and western north China and northeastern Shandong, with rainfall in some areas of 5-10 mm and locally 10-20 mm, conducive to soil moisture replenishment and winter wheat grain filling.
Most of the summer planting areas had fine weather and suitable soil moisture, conducive to summer planting. From June 5-8, the summer planting areas in southern Huang-Huai and Jianghuai were dominated by fine weather, and most areas had suitable soil moisture, conducive to summer corn sowing and rice transplanting.
III. Outlook for summer harvest and summer planting weather from June 10-12
The northern wheat harvest areas will be dominated by fine weather, conducive to winter wheat maturation, harvest and drying. It is expected that from June 10-12, northern Huang-Huai, northeastern Jianghuai, southeastern northwest region and southern north China will be dominated by fine weather, suitable for wheat harvest; on the 10th, southeastern Hebei and northern Shandong will have moderate rain, which will slightly affect the harvest of already mature wheat.
Most of north China and the northwest region have relatively suitable soil moisture, conducive to winter wheat grain filling. It is expected that from June 10-12, most of north China, northeastern Huang-Huai and most of the northwest region will have suitable soil moisture, conducive to winter wheat grain filling. From June 10-11, localized areas in eastern north China, Shandong, and southern and eastern Gansu will have severe convective weather mainly featuring wind and hail, accompanied by short-duration heavy precipitation, which may cause localized winter wheat lodging, unfavorable to winter wheat grain filling, maturation and later harvest.
Most of the summer planting areas have relatively good soil moisture, conducive to summer planting. It is expected that from June 10-12, southern north China, most of Huang-Huai and Jianghuai summer planting areas will have mostly fine weather, with mostly suitable soil moisture, conducive to summer corn sowing and emergence and single-season rice transplanting.
It is expected that from June 13-14, north China, Huang-Huai and the northwest region will continue to have fine weather, favorable to winter wheat grain filling, maturation, harvest and drying.
IV. Agricultural production recommendations
Wheat harvest areas such as southern north China, most of Huang-Huai and northeastern Jianghuai should seize the fine weather to rush the harvest and drying of wheat, and pay attention to defending against the adverse effects of severe convective weather such as strong winds and hail.
Southern north China, most of Huang-Huai and other areas should sow summer corn and other crops at the appropriate time. Plots lacking soil moisture should pay attention to sowing with artificial soil moisture creation or irrigating promptly after sowing, striving for full seedling emergence in one sowing; Jianghuai should use the fine weather to speed up single-season rice transplanting.
