Fumanmei, also known as Meiwang, was named [according to reports] by Mr. Zhou He'an of Hong Kong, China, who purchased it in Guangzhou in 1989 from Mr. Su Yuan of Chaoshan for 500 US dollars. At the time, the three stems bore only plum-petal buds the size of mung beans, but they later bloomed as true plum petals, and so it was named.
Characteristics: Fumanmei is a true plum-petal wonder flower, with sepals level at the shoulders and slightly incurved, petals and stamens transformed into a pouch that slightly clasps the column, and the lip transformed into a slightly open club shape that harmonizes perfectly with the column and the stamen-transformed petals. This variety's inflorescence is evenly spaced, the flowers are uniform in size, deep purple in color, with a sandalwood fragrance. In form it resembles the Cymbidium faberi 'Chengmei' and is a true plum petal of Cymbidium sinense. This variety is easy to cultivate and has a high sprouting rate. It once won the gold award at the 6th China Orchid Exposition.
