Introduction to the Cymbidium ensifolium 'Zuifei He' (also known as 'Lao Bai He') variety

About Lao Bai (Bai Wenhui): This plant was found by a mountain farmer nicknamed Ya Er from Ziliang Town, Rong County, in the Fuzuo mountain range (the mountain range below Honghe Guan) in Langshui Township of that county. Even before it flowered in cultivation, its plant form was very elegant. It was purchased by a orchid enthusiast surnamed Mo from the county seat, who bought it back and propagated it in anticipation. In September of the following year (that is, September 2004) it bloomed for the first time. When it bloomed, Mr. Ma happened to arrive in Rong County, and Ma bought three divisions and took them back. I obtained one division of the new plant and have grown it until now. The orchid enthusiast surnamed Mo from Rong County kept only two old backbulbs as stock, and the stock he kept was later all bought by an orchid enthusiast surnamed Li from Yulin City.

Furthermore, quoting what the orchid enthusiast from Rong County said: Earlier, the Wenzhou orchid enthusiast Ma Xianmin purchased it from Rong County and brought it to Wenzhou. Later, when a craze for Cymbidium kanran appeared in Wenzhou, Ma Xianmin brought some divisions of this variety to Pingle County, Guilin, to exchange with orchid enthusiasts from Senyu Orchid Garden for new Cymbidium kanran varieties (Guilin is the main producing area of Guangxi Cymbidium kanran). Only then did Guangxi have this variety again.

Therefore, Zuifei He is Lao Bai He, and Lao Bai He is Zuifei He -- they are simply different names for the same variety! The flower shape, color, and the flower scape rising above the leaves are all very good, making it a fine variety; however, its only shortcoming is that the flowers are too small.
