Datang Fenghua, a precious variety of Cymbidium sinense, is acclaimed by orchid enthusiasts as a treasure among Chinese orchids and a wonder of the world, because it combines numerous distinctive features in one plant: leaf buds that emit a mysterious delicate fragrance, large colorful patches of leaf variegation resembling butterfly wings, crystal tissue, true three-star butterfly flowers, and easy identification.
Datang Fenghua is also known as Xiangya Shuijing, Xiangjing Qidie, Shuijing Xiangdie, and Datang Baosui. It is said to have appeared at the end of the last era of Cymbidium sinense. Its flowers bloom as three-star butterflies with a distinct crystal dragon, and the leaf buds have a noticeable fragrance when they open. Each plant often produces one to two fully butterfly-transformed leaves resembling the lip, with colors and shapes completely similar to the flowers. The new buds smell very fragrant when they first open. Because it can rival the Datang Fengyu of Cymbidium lianpan, it was renamed Datang Baosui, and recently renamed again as Datang Fenghua, a metaphor for its role as the leading variety of Cymbidium sinense, in full bloom during China's rare flourishing age seen only once in thousands of years.
Throughout history and across the world, among the thousands upon thousands of orchid species in the Orchidaceae family, including Cymbidium sinense, Cymbidium goeringii, Cymbidium faberi, Cymbidium tortisepalum, Cymbidium lianpan, Cymbidium ensifolium, and Western orchids, only "Datang Fenghua" is the most distinctive. It is understood that currently only this variety has the fragrant-bud characteristic, making it truly unique and exceptionally dazzling.
