Potting: The first step in cultivating orchids is usually to dig up humus-rich forest soil and mountain soil for potting, as well as artificial mixes. Generally use clay pots, which have good air permeability and drainage; plant at a depth where the top of the pseudobulb is level with the soil surface. Initially place in a shady spot, then gradually expose to sunlight after about ten days.
Watering and misting (in a naturally ventilated environment; for home growing you must judge for yourself): Orchids require both the air and the soil to be moist. Apart from watering more in the hot summer so the soil does not dry out, ordinarily, to increase air humidity, you may need to mist or spray several times a day. In summer, water in the early morning or evening; in the rainy season the potting soil should be slightly dry. In autumn, as temperatures drop and growth gradually stops, simply keep the potting soil from drying out. However, Cymbidium sinense blooms in winter, so it needs more water in winter. Rainwater is best; never use alkaline water.
