Petal shape refers to the shape of the petals. Orchids generally have five major petal shapes: plum petal, lotus petal, narcissus petal, plain-heart petal, and strange petal. 1. Plum petal: The sepals are short and round, shaped like plum blossom petals, the column petals form a hood, and the lip petal is flat and straight, hard and not curling backward. Song Mei is the most typical representative variety, and there are about 50 commonly seen varieties. 2. Lotus petal: The sepals are thick and broad, shaped like lotus petals, the column petals do not form a hood, and are shaped like two half-open clam shells, and the lip petal is broader and larger than those of other petal shapes. According to flower size, it can be divided into small, medium, and large types. Zheng Tong He and Gai He are representative varieties. 3. Narcissus petal: The sepals are narrower and longer than plum petals, the petal tips are long and pointed, the column petals have a slight hood, and the lip petal hangs down and often curls backward. Wang Zi, Fang Zi, and nearly 20 other varieties are representative varieties. Narcissus petals are further divided into plum-form narcissus petals and lotus-form narcissus petals. Plum-form narcissus petals have sepals somewhat like plum petals, but the petals are longer. Xi Zi and Cai Mei Narcissus belong to this category; lotus-form narcissus petals have broad and large flower sepals like lotus petals. Long Zi is the typical representative variety. 4. Plain-heart petal: Those whose lip petal has no differently colored dots, blocks, or markings are plain-heart petals. According to the moss color of the lip petal, they can be divided into green-moss plain, white-moss plain, yellow-moss plain, peach-cheek plain, and bristle plain, with green-moss plain being the treasured type. Plain-heart petals can be divided by the shape of the sepals and petals into four categories: grass plain, bamboo petal, lotus form, and plum form. Grass plain: The tips of the sepals and petals split open like chicken claws. It is placed in this category only because of the color of its lip petal. Bamboo petal: The sepals are thin in texture, shaped like bamboo leaves, and the petals are relatively narrow. Lotus form: The sepals closely resemble lotus petals, and the petals are thick and elegant. Plum form: The sepals are just like plum petals. 5. Strange petal: The lower edges of the secondary petals and petals are somewhat lip-petal-like, and the surface has dense blister-like protrusions resembling toad skin. In addition, increased or reduced sepals, increased lip petals, and the like all belong to strange petals. There are mainly three categories: butterfly type, in which both the lower side and inner side of the secondary petals and column petals show lip-petal characteristics, shaped like a butterfly. There are four kinds: full butterfly, half butterfly, grass butterfly, and column-lip form. Multi-petal type: those with an increased number of sepals or overlapping sepals are multi-petal type. Multi-lip type: any flower crown with an increased number of lip petals is multi-lip type.
