According to a recent forecast by the agricultural materials department, 3 types of fertilizer will sell well on the market in the future.

First, special-purpose fertilizer for vegetables and fruits. The prices of China's bulk agricultural products such as rice, wheat, corn and soybeans are currently 10%-70% higher than those on the international market, and their competitiveness in the international market is weak. Yet the prices of China's vegetables and fruits are about 30% lower than those of similar products on the international market, giving them strong competitiveness in the international market. After joining the WTO, China's vegetable and fruit export volume has increased substantially, and demand for special-purpose fertilizer for vegetables and fruits is expected to rise greatly.

Second, industrialized organic fertilizer. Long-term one-sided application of chemical fertilizer easily leads to a decline in soil organic matter and a drop in crop quality, such as melons that are not sweet, rice that is not fragrant, and vegetables that have no flavor. One of the key measures to improve the quality of agricultural products is to apply more organic fertilizer. Organic fertilizer that has undergone industrial processing has high fertilizer efficiency, and in the future it will gradually replace farmyard manure and become the main force of the fertilizer industry. In particular, organic-inorganic compound fertilizer produced by treating livestock and poultry manure together with a small amount of chemical fertilizer has good prospects for development, as it can both increase the use of organic fertilizer and improve and protect the environment. It is predicted that the organic-inorganic compound fertilizer of the 21st century will be mainly organic fertilizer (containing more than 70% organic matter), with a small amount of inorganic fertilizer transported to places where organic fertilizer resources are concentrated and blended in, so as to adjust the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium ratio in the organic fertilizer or increase the quick-acting nitrogen in the organic fertilizer. It is predicted that the application amount of organic fertilizer will gradually increase in the 21st century.

Third, high-efficiency controlled-release fertilizer. In the future, chemical fertilizer will develop not only toward high concentration and high quality, but also toward high efficiency (high utilization rate), energy saving and compounding (multi-functional compounding). High-efficiency fertilizer is internationally recognized as one of the development directions for fertilizer in the 21st century. The main development directions of high-efficiency fertilizer are the production of slow-release and controlled-release fertilizers, as well as fertilizers and foliar fertilizers mixed with nitrification inhibitors or urease inhibitors. "Energy-saving" fertilizer not only means lower fertilizer production costs and stronger competitiveness, but more importantly means saving resources, which is conducive to sustainable development. The dissolution rate and nutrient release rate of high-efficiency, high-quality controlled-release fertilizer can both be controlled, which can maximize the fertilizer utilization rate. Because developed countries around the world use controlled-release fertilizer in large quantities, their fertilizer utilization rate reaches more than 60%. Therefore, high-efficiency, high-quality controlled-release fertilizer has broad market space.
