In recent days, the weather has been very muggy. Today the high temperature here may be above 33 degrees. I wonder how it is elsewhere?
Muggy autumn weather deserves extra attention in orchid care. If you are not careful, stem rot and soft rot will sneak in.
Because:
1. Orchids grow rapidly in early autumn, their physiological activity is active, and the new shoots are still tender, so their ability to resist pathogen invasion is relatively weak.
2. After enduring the hot summer, the orchid pots themselves have accumulated stale air due to metabolism and even hollow or rotten roots, which easily creates conditions suitable for pathogens to multiply and flare up.
3. In post-autumn orchid care, because of the emphasis on "no drying in autumn," the potting soil is often kept moist. Once muggy weather hits, any negligence in care can easily lead to trouble.
Countermeasures:
1. Good ventilation is most important, and it is best to have air circulation, with fresh air exchange.
2. Water according to the weather: water more in dry heat and cool conditions, water less in muggy, hot and humid conditions, and water slowly in overcast and rainy weather.
3. If you have the conditions and the time, it is best to let the orchids get more mild sunlight.
4. It is necessary to apply pesticide once or twice for prevention. You can use agricultural streptomycin at 1000 times, or Amistar at 2500 times, spraying and drenching once.
5. If the potting soil has a relatively high humus content and has not been repotted for a long time, you can consider using lime water or plant ash water to adjust the pH in the pot once.
