How to Grow Phaius Orchids? A Detailed Guide to the Correct Cultivation Methods
Phaius, also known as the nun's orchid, monkey orchid, or crane orchid, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the orchid family (Orchidaceae). It has large pseudobulbs, large leaves, and large flowers in a wide range of colors. Phaius is fairly widely distributed and its care is relatively undemanding; it can be grown outdoors and grows vigorously.
For container growing, you can use a mix of leaf mold or mountain soil with a small amount of river sand and fertilizer, repotting once each spring together with division and trimming any overly long roots. During the growing season, provide plenty of fertilizer to encourage vigorous growth and more, better flowers the following year. Water with fertilizer solution once every 1-2 weeks on average. When grown outdoors in containers, Phaius needs appropriate shading, otherwise sunscald is likely to occur and detract from its appearance. Phaius is relatively cold-tolerant; in winter, it will not be harmed as long as the room temperature stays above 10 degrees. If the leaves are sometimes damaged by cold, they can be cut off, and when the temperature is suitable the pseudobulbs can normally grow new leaves and bloom.
For small-scale propagation at home, Phaius is usually propagated by dividing the pseudobulbs, which root easily.
