How to water orchids is a question many new orchid growers want to ask, yet it is hard to explain clearly in words all at once. Orchid growers each have their own watering methods, and the method most people usually use is that watering depends not only on the different orchid pots and the different growing media, but also needs to be applied flexibly according to changes in the weather and the growth condition of the orchid seedlings.

Below I have written a doggerel poem I like for all orchid growers, for reference only.

Watering orchids requires "four looks": first look at the orchid pot, second look at the medium, third look at the climate, fourth look at the seedlings.

First look at the orchid pot. Regardless of whether the orchid pot is large or small, purple clay pots and plastic pots are both not bad; there are many kinds of pots with strong or weak breathability, and small pots that dry easily should be watered more frequently.

Second look at the growing medium. When watering orchids, look at the growing medium; if it drains strongly, it is easy to water often. Different growing media make it hard to set a fixed day, so look often at the orchid soil and then at the seedlings.

Third look at the weather. Summer heat and winter cold bring high temperature differences, and rainy weather is especially important. Different seasons are not treated the same, and the weather decides when to water.

Fourth look at the orchid seedlings. How strong or weak are the orchid plants and how many seedlings are there? Strong and weak orchid plants are not watered the same. Many vigorous seedlings absorb water quickly, while diseased and weak seedlings need less water.

Note: The first thing to look at when watering is the size of the orchid pot and the pot's breathability and water permeability. Clay pots have better breathability, while plastic pots and porcelain pots have poorer breathability. The growing media that orchid growers buy nowadays are generally ready-made products, and many people also use their own mixed growing media to grow orchids. Whether it is a bought ready-made product or self-mixed growing media, you must look at the strength of breathability and water permeability, and also look at the weather. Because the seasons differ, the temperature changes greatly, and then there are factors such as rain and snow weather, different climates should be treated differently. You should also look at the growth vigor of the orchid seedlings and the number of seedlings in one orchid plant, and so on...... Then, combined with your own orchid-growing experience, only gradually can you sum up your own watering method.
