Are plastic orchid pots suitable for growing orchids?
There are now many kinds of materials for flower pots, and some flower enthusiasts have requirements about pot material, especially for more particular plants. In this article we discuss the question that flower enthusiasts care about: are plastic orchid pots good for orchids?
Editor's view: no matter what material the orchid pot is made of, as long as it is used properly, good orchids can be grown. "Used properly" here needs to be judged according to your own actual orchid-growing conditions. For example, a black orchid pot is fine indoors, but it is a problem on a balcony, because black absorbs heat quickly in summer and is prone to burning the roots, so the pot needs to match the environment and the growing medium.
Below, let us look at several characteristics of plastic orchid pots summarized by orchid growers:
1. Saves time and effort: when I chose plastic orchid pots, I also chose a fine growing medium (fine river sand plus fine cork bark plus fine brick fragments). One watering in winter lasts more than a month, and in spring, summer and autumn I water once every ten days to half a month. This greatly reduces the workload and labor intensity.
2. Consistent humidity inside the pot: unlike clay pots, which after a couple of days are wet inside and dry outside, the roots near the pot wall do not become hollow, and the "moist" period inside the pot is relatively longer.
3. Light, hygienic and neat: plastic pots are light in their own weight and uniform in size. They put little pressure on the orchid rack, are easy to place, and the pot body does not produce alkali, so they look very tidy and hygienic.
4. Rooting and shoot growth: plastic pots keep warm well, and in winter and early spring they are beneficial to orchid root growth, making cymbidium orchids sprout early, produce more shoots and grow faster, and generally they do not have abortive buds. Of course, everything has two sides, with advantages there are also disadvantages. For example, the drainage problem of the growing medium, the ventilation problem of the site, and the problems of shading and cooling in summer must not be ignored.
No proof without evidence, the picture is the proof: the balcony is uniformly full of plastic orchid pots.
