A Detailed Guide to Making Moss for the Surface of Orchid Pots
Making moss for the surface of orchid pots is actually not complicated at all; a few simple steps will do it. As for the question some orchid growers ask, whether it is good to cover the surface of an orchid pot with moss, there may be no absolute answer, because some growers who use moss on the pot surface raise their orchids very well, and those who do not use it can also raise them just as well, so this question is a relative one.
Method for making moss for the surface of orchid pots:
1. Dig up some moss, tear it into pieces, mix it into the sifted fine peat crumbs, and stir evenly;

2. After potting the orchid, sprinkle slightly finer potting medium on the pot surface, spread it level, press it down gently, and water thoroughly;
3. Spread the fine peat crumbs mixed with moss seedlings onto the pot surface, about 3 mm thick, spread them evenly, then press gently with your hand until water from the layer below rises up and the peat is thoroughly wet;
4. After this is done, use the soaking method for the first few waterings to prevent the peat crumbs from being washed away; afterward, spray the pot surface frequently to keep it moist. After about two months, the pot surface will be covered with moss.
