The 'Red Lanterns High' variety was selected and named by a retired cadre from the Xiangjiang Hotel in Zhangzhou, Fujian.
This variety also has a legendary story. The original owner, Huang Huisheng, contracted a serious illness in his later years and had always loved growing orchids; orchids were his spiritual support.
Because the illness caused him great psychological trauma, he kept growing orchids as a spiritual support. Mr. Huang then actively sought treatment, and after a successful surgery,
he made orchid growing one of his rehabilitation activities. The orchids were grown on the 6th-floor balcony of his daughter's home, with no elevator, and every day he went up and down like this to see the orchids and care for the orchid plants.
In the year after the surgery, he saw this group of previously selected Cymbidium sinense plants bloom, each tongue bearing red markings just the same, like red lanterns hanging one after another!
He named this variety **Red Lanterns High**, implying that he was fortunate. Mr. Huang is now over 80 years old and in good health, and in his free time he takes pleasure in fishing!
