How to Tell the Difference Between Orchid Flower Buds and Leaf Buds
For beginners growing orchids, the thing they most want to see is blooming. When a bud swells up, is it a flower bud or a leaf bud? Let's take a look at the differences between orchid flower buds and leaf buds. The distinguishing methods described in this article are not 100% accurate, so orchid growers should still observe and learn more.

The differences between orchid flower buds and leaf buds generally have several characteristics:
1. When flower buds emerge, they are mostly somewhat lopsided and relatively rounder and plumper than leaf buds (leaf buds emerge slightly flat; a small number of leaf buds are also round, but they are thin and slender, not as thick and plump as flower buds).
2. There are roots beneath leaf buds, but not beneath flower buds (except for orchids that bloom on the leaves). So you can dig down a little to see whether there are roots.
3. You can gently pinch it with your hand; flower buds are looser, while leaf buds are harder!
In addition, leaf buds generally grow on the pseudobulbs of new orchid shoots, while flower buds generally grow on the pseudobulbs of the previous year's mature orchid plants.
