Thiophanate-methyl is a broad-spectrum systemic low-toxicity fungicide, originally developed by Nippon Soda Co., Ltd. of Japan. It has both preventive and curative effects on many plant diseases, and its systemic activity is stronger than that of carbendazim. According to its chemical structure, thiophanate-methyl belongs to the substituted benzene class of fungicides. After being absorbed by plants, thiophanate-methyl is converted into carbendazim. It mainly interferes with the formation of pathogen hyphae, affects pathogen cell division, poisons the cell wall, and causes the germ tubes produced by spore germination to become deformed, thereby killing the pathogen. The residual effect period is 5 to 7 days. It is mainly used for foliar spraying, and can also be used for soil treatment.
Common formulations: 50% and 70% wettable powders, 40% suspension concentrate.
Targets of control: brown spot, powdery mildew, rust, anthracnose, gray mold, black spot and other fungal diseases. Each time use a 700- to 1000-fold dilution of 50% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder, or an 800- to 1200-fold dilution of 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder.
Precautions for use:
1. It can be mixed with many fungicides, acaricides and insecticides, but must be mixed and used immediately. It must not be mixed with copper preparations or alkaline pesticides.
2. If thiophanate-methyl is used alone continuously over a long period, pathogens will develop resistance, reducing the control effect, so it should be used in rotation with other agents. However, carbendazim, benomyl and thiophanate-methyl must not be used in rotation, because there is cross-resistance among them.
3. The agent is irritating to the skin and eyes, so direct contact with the spray solution should be avoided. During use, if the spray solution splashes into the eyes, immediately rinse with clean water or 2% baking soda water.
