20% Yield Increase, Comprehensive Economic Benefit Reaches 2000 yuan per mu

Our Website News  On September 23, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences held the on-site observation meeting on the research and demonstration of the integrated production model for green yield and efficiency increase of potato in Guyuan County, Hebei Province. The meeting listened to an introduction of the overall project situation on site and observed a potato combine harvester harvesting demonstration and a potato variety display. The results showed that the measured yield in the project demonstration area was more than 3000 kg per mu, a 20% yield increase, saving more than 250 yuan in labor costs, reducing pesticide application by about 10%, with actual water use of 60 tons per mu, and comprehensive economic benefit of about 2000 yuan per mu. Vice President Lei Maoliang attended the meeting and delivered a speech. The meeting was chaired by Yuan Longjiang, Director of the Bureau of Achievement Transformation.

Lei Maoliang fully affirmed the phased results achieved by the project team. He pointed out that, judging from the results displayed by the project demonstration, the achievements can be summarized as “three increases and one decrease.” Through the selection of high-quality and high-yield varieties and the application of virus-free seed potatoes, the effect on increasing per-unit yield was significant; through soil testing and formula fertilization technology, efficient water use technology, and pesticide reduction and efficient use technology, the utilization efficiency of water, fertilizer, and pesticides and the comprehensive economic benefit were improved, promoting green potato production and the improvement of the agricultural environment; through mechanized planting technology, the degree of mechanization in the potato planting process was improved, saving labor costs. Meanwhile, innovation in staple food product processing technology using raw starch as the basic material reduced the production cost of potato staple food products. The construction and promotion of this technical model will greatly improve the production level and planting benefits of potatoes in the northern single-cropping region, achieve the development goals of “one control, two reductions, and three basics,” and are of great significance to the sustainable development of modern agriculture and the potato industry in our country.

Xiong Xingyao, researcher at the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and chief expert of the project, introduced that in response to a series of problems affecting the development of the potato industry, such as low potato yield per unit area, lack of special varieties for staple food product processing, low application rate of virus-free seed potatoes, urgent need to improve the utilization efficiency of water, fertilizer, and pesticides, the need to further strengthen the integration of agricultural machinery and agronomy, and the need for large-scale research and development of staple food products and their processing technologies suitable for China's consumer market, in 2015, with the support of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences Science and Technology Innovation Project, the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers organized relevant experts from the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning, the Institute of Plant Protection, the Nanjing Institute of Agricultural Mechanization, and the Institute of Food Science and Technology to form a research team and carried out research work on the project “Research and Demonstration of Integrated Production Model for Green Yield and Efficiency Increase of Potato,” laid out 5 demonstration bases in different ecological regions across the country, integrated 7 core technologies including high-yield and high-quality varieties, virus-free rapid propagation technology for seed potatoes, soil testing and formula fertilization technology, efficient water use technology, pesticide reduction and efficient use technology, mechanized efficient planting technology, and staple food product processing technology, and achieved phased results.
