The forum held full exchanges and discussions on how to seize opportunities, actively integrate into the “Belt and Road” strategy, and promote international cooperation. Representatives from Liberia, Ethiopia and Vanuatu introduced their countries' needs for agricultural science and technology cooperation. Experts from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Agriculture and the agricultural science academies of the nine provinces (regions) in the tropical zone offered insightful views through vivid cases and detailed analysis for better carrying out “Belt and Road” agricultural science and technology cooperation.

At the forum, Vice President Liu Guodao of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences and Deputy Minister Thomas Kporkpor of the Ministry of Agriculture of Liberia signed a letter of intent for science and technology cooperation. Under the South-South cooperation partnership, the two sides will carry out extensive cooperation in animal and plant breeding and genetics, agronomy, pest and disease control, postharvest processing technology, biotechnology, agricultural extension, agricultural mechanization, water and agricultural waste management, aquaculture, bioenergy and personnel training.

On the same day, the International Cooperation Professional Committee of the National Tropical Agricultural Science and Technology Collaboration Network was officially unveiled and established. The committee was jointly established by the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences together with agricultural research institutions and related agricultural reclamation enterprises in the nine provinces (regions) of the tropical zone. It will give full play to the advantages of all parties, build a platform for deepening exchanges and mutual learning, achieve efficient allocation and sharing of resources, information and technology, and promote the development of tropical agricultural science and technology in countries along the “Belt and Road.”

Li Shanglan, Party Secretary of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, introduced that the “Belt and Road” region, especially the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, is mainly composed of tropical developing countries, where the level of tropical agricultural technology and the development of the tropical crop industry are relatively backward and there is an urgent need for advanced tropical agricultural production technology. As a national-level scientific research institution engaged in tropical agricultural research and development in China, the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, after more than 60 years of development, has accumulated a large number of scientific and technological achievements and practical tropical agricultural technologies, and has already carried out extensive cooperation and exchanges with countries in the “Belt and Road” region. The convening of this forum further consolidated the strength and wisdom of the nine provinces (regions) in China's tropical zone, built a platform for exchanges with “Belt and Road” countries, and will further promote the transfer of technology of China's tropical agriculture in the “Belt and Road” region and expand agricultural cooperation and exchanges with “Belt and Road” countries.
