This website reports On October 18, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences held an on-site observation meeting for the demonstration of the integrated production model of single-season rice green yield-and-efficiency-increasing technology in Zhuji City, Zhejiang Province, centrally showcasing the achievements of integrated technology application and discussing the next steps of research and demonstration work. Chen Mengshan, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Huang Xuming, Vice Governor of Zhejiang Province, attended the meeting.
Chen Mengshan fully affirmed the remarkable results achieved by the research and demonstration project of the integrated production model of rice green yield-and-efficiency-increasing technology. He said that the single-season rice production model demonstrated in Zhuji has the characteristics of seeking high yield on the basis of existing output, achieving comprehensive mechanization together with high quality and diversity, and showing more remarkable cost savings and efficiency gains, reflecting the requirements of the “one control, two reductions, three basics” goal put forward by the Ministry of Agriculture, and letting us see the bright prospects for rice production with higher yield, higher efficiency and stronger capacity for sustainable development.
Chen Mengshan emphasized that the Party Central Committee and the State Council have always attached great importance to the issue of food security, requiring that basic self-sufficiency in grain and absolute security of staple food be ensured, and that the Chinese people's rice bowl be firmly held in their own hands. Rice is a major grain variety and an important indicator of whether our country's food security is assured. To ensure basic self-sufficiency in grain, rice must shoulder a heavy burden; to ensure absolute security of staple food, rice must be absolutely safe. But rice is also the variety with the largest historical production fluctuations, and is currently facing many challenges such as rice prices higher than those abroad, rising production costs and intensifying resource and environmental constraints. To promote the stable development of rice production, the production mode must be transformed and greater reliance must be placed on science and technology as the driver.
Chen Mengshan required that the next step, on the basis of summarizing earlier work, is to further clarify goals oriented toward the “13th Five-Year Plan” and build a green production technology model for the entire rice industry chain.
First, strengthen source innovation and raise the research level of the model. In response to the current technical needs of rice production, further strengthen research and development of widely adaptable, high-yield and high-quality varieties, fertilizer- and pesticide-saving, and full-process mechanized light and simplified technologies, so that every link has its core technology.
Second, strengthen collaborative innovation and improve the technical system of the model. It is necessary both to strengthen collaboration within the academy, further integrating the academy's existing technological achievements, and to strengthen collaboration within the system, further reinforcing cooperation with leading domestic research institutions, establishing a research and development system of collaborative innovation and technology integration demonstration, and driving the improvement of our country's overall rice research level.
Third, vigorously promote the transformation of achievements and expand the influence of the model. The technical standards and policy recommendations formed in the model research should be actively transformed to government departments; the different technical models formed in various places should be transformed and promoted to local technology extension departments, large grain-growing households and other new agricultural business entities, so as to better give play to the benefits of model research and demonstration.
Fourth, strengthen institutional construction and promote the long-term and institutionalized nature of model research. Model research topics must come from production practice and must be closely connected with agricultural departments and extension departments. Model research is not a temporary task or a departmental task, but a long-term task and an academy-wide scientific research activity. The model should not only integrate and promote the varieties and technologies of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, but also integrate and promote advanced technologies of the entire industry, truly giving play to the demonstration and leading role of the model.
According to Cheng Shihua, a researcher and director of the Rice Research Institute and the overall project leader, with the support of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences' Science and Technology Innovation Project, the project team, centering on the goals of “one control, two reductions, three basics” and “green yield and efficiency increase”, joined forces with relevant institutes within the academy as well as local research institutions and agricultural technology extension departments, took new varieties bred by the Rice Research Institute as the main carrier, and, targeting rice production methods in the Yangtze River Basin and the growth characteristics of different seasons, carried out research and demonstration of 5 different rice technology integration production models for early, middle and late rice, all achieving good results. The single-season rice production model research and demonstration carried out in Zhuji this time integrated and applied 11 core technologies, including the high-yield and high-quality rice varieties “Chunyou 84” and “Chunyou 927”, the rice “wheat-bed style” wet cultivation technique, and the new light soilless substrate seedling-raising technique for machine-transplanted rice, and reached the expected goals. Yield measurements showed that the thousand-mu demonstration field of “Chunyou 84” increased yield by more than 100 kg per mu on average, a yield increase of 15%; saved about 150 tons of farmland irrigation water, reduced chemical fertilizer application by about 5% and pesticide use by more than 30%; saved more than 100 yuan in costs, with a total efficiency increase of more than 400 yuan, an efficiency increase of 20%.
The meeting was chaired by Wang Hanzhong, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Relevant leaders of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Agriculture, the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Zhuji Municipal Party Committee, relevant heads of the Achievement Transformation Bureau, the Science and Technology Bureau, the Rice Research Institute, the Agricultural Mechanization Institute and the Plant Protection Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, as well as more than 70 leaders and experts from relevant departments of major southern rice-producing provinces, attended the meeting.
