Xinhua News Agency, Rome, October 24 (Reporter Wang Xingqiao) - On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, Kim Jong-jin, the official in charge of South-South cooperation at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, said that after years of development, South-South cooperation is showing a trend of playing a greater role, especially as in recent years China has played a huge role in South-South cooperation, significantly advancing its further development.
Kim Jong-jin, Director of the FAO's South-South Cooperation and Resource Mobilization Division, said in an exclusive interview with a Xinhua reporter that South-South cooperation is characterized by partnership, emphasizing equality and mutual trust, mutual benefit and win-win results, and solidarity and mutual assistance, and that many countries actively participate in cooperation, sharing useful experience, technological innovation, and new knowledge and new ideas.
Kim Jong-jin said that North-South cooperation also plays a role, while South-South cooperation has played and will continue to play a greater role. Looking at global cooperation at present, South-South cooperation is more effective, with many examples in technical cooperation. For example, in its cooperation with Nigeria, China successfully promoted the combination of traditional agricultural technology with fisheries, reducing pesticide use while greatly increasing yields, and advancing sustainable agricultural and environmental development.
Kim Jong-jin said that through the South-South cooperation program led by the FAO, the traditional Chinese agricultural technique of raising fish in rice paddies was introduced by Nigeria. The Nigerian government supported the project through a trust fund, and Chinese experts conducted trials and technical training in many places in Nigeria. In some demonstration areas, rice and tilapia yields nearly doubled, benefiting smallholder farmers.
As an FAO agricultural economist, Kim Jong-jin said that Nigeria, by introducing technology through South-South cooperation, improved food and nutrition security. Practice has proven that through raising fish in rice paddies, rural poverty was reduced, and local consumers also gained access to high-quality food supplies. The net income of smallholder farmers participating in the project increased by 29% to 96%. This successful experience was also extended to Sierra Leone and Mali.
Kim Jong-jin said that over the past 10 years, the China-Nigeria South-South cooperation program has benefited more than 1 million people. Since 2003, nearly 700 Chinese experts have been sent to Nigeria on assignments of two years or longer to teach new technologies such as irrigation, crop production and aquaculture.
Speaking of China's contribution to South-South cooperation, Kim Jong-jin said that since 1996, China's cooperation with the FAO in the field of South-South cooperation has been highly effective, having sent more than 1,000 agricultural technical experts to 25 countries and regions, with the largest number in Africa, transferring more than 400 technologies to African countries. China's outstanding performance will advance South-South cooperation.
