Economic Daily News (Reporter Huang Junyi) The North Hubei Water Resources Allocation Project has officially begun construction. It is understood that this is the largest major water conservancy project in terms of investment in China this year, and once completed it will fundamentally solve the problem of drought and water shortage in the “drought-prone” areas of northern Hubei.

The project has a total investment of 17.95 billion yuan and a total construction period of 45 months. It is the water conservancy project with the largest investment scale, the widest coverage area and the largest beneficiary population ever implemented in Hubei Province. According to the approval by the National Development and Reform Commission, the North Hubei Water Resources Allocation Project is clearly focused on urban and rural domestic and industrial water supply, as well as agricultural water supply for the Tangdong area. The project takes the Danjiangkou Reservoir as its water source, drawing water from Qingquangou of the Danjiangkou Reservoir, running from northwest to southeast across the northern Hubei hilly land, passing along the way through Laohekou City, Xiangzhou District and Zaoyang City of Xiangyang City, and Suixian County, Zengdu District and Guangshui City of Suizhou City, and ending at Wangjiachong Reservoir in Dawu County of Xiaogan City.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister of Water Resources Chen Lei said that the northern Hubei region is an important production base for safeguarding national food security and an important automobile industry corridor in Hubei Province. Providing reliable water resource guarantees for the northern Hubei region can ensure the safety of urban and rural water supply and food security, improve the regional ecological environment, and help people in the old revolutionary base areas and impoverished mountainous areas escape poverty, increase production and raise incomes.

According to Wang Zhongfa, Director of the Hubei Provincial Department of Water Resources, the water conveyance line has a total length of nearly 270 km, with gravity flow throughout the entire route, a planned annual water diversion volume of 1.4 billion cubic meters, joint scheduling using 36 reservoirs in the receiving area, and 24 water diversion outlets. Once completed, it will benefit 4.82 million people and resolve domestic and industrial-agricultural water use for 4.69 million mu of arable land.
