Reporter Chen Liping Recently learned from the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress that the Ministry of Agriculture has formed a draft revision of the Fisheries Law, and the Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council suggested that the Ministry of Agriculture, in light of the opinions and suggestions put forward in the representatives' motions, promptly study the issues related to the revision of the law.

At the Third Session of the Twelfth National People's Congress held in March this year, 30 representatives including Xue Shaoxian put forward a motion to revise and improve the Fisheries Law. The motion stated that the relevant provisions of the Fisheries Law cannot reflect the development concept of prioritizing ecology, lack relevant norms on fishermen's rights, stock enhancement and release, artificial reef construction, the basic fishery management system, and fishery safety production, and that some provisions are not highly operable and are inconsistent with other laws, and it was suggested that the law be revised.

The Ministry of Agriculture believes that, with social and economic development, some provisions of the Fisheries Law have become unsuitable and inconsistent with the current reality of fishery production, are not conducive to water area ecological protection and the sustainable development of fisheries, and there is an urgent need to revise the Fisheries Law. The revision of the Fisheries Law has been included in the State Council's 2015 legislative work plan.
