China's first livestock and poultry breeding and slaughter welfare standard officially launched
Recently, the Chinese Veterinary Medical Association, together with more than 30 leading breeding and slaughter enterprises in China's livestock industry, officially launched the drafting of China's livestock and poultry breeding and slaughter welfare standards at the Chinese Veterinary Conference. This will become the first industry standard for farm animal welfare in China's animal husbandry and veterinary field covering six major livestock species: pigs, broiler chickens, laying hens, mutton sheep, beef cattle and dairy cattle.
According to reports, China's livestock and poultry breeding and slaughter welfare standards are intended to set technical parameters in areas such as feeding management, livestock housing environment, disease prevention and control, behavioral expression, personnel operation requirements, pre-slaughter handling, stunning and bleeding by incision, so as to determine the basic welfare requirements for the breeding and slaughter stages. The formulation of livestock and poultry breeding and slaughter welfare standards will help promote welfare-oriented animal breeding and humane slaughter, raise the level of animal health and epidemic prevention, and enhance the value of livestock products, thereby promoting the safety of animal-derived food.
