Developing the vegetable industry to help poverty alleviation: Qianjiang Municipal Agriculture Bureau assists Congjia Village

[Introduction · China Vegetable Network] Since the launch of the “targeted poverty alleviation” work, the poverty alleviation task force of the Qianjiang Municipal Agriculture Bureau quickly stationed itself in Congjia Village, Yuyang Town, to advance the targeted poverty alleviation work. In late December 2015, all 64 cadres from the Qianjiang Municipal Agriculture Bureau were assigned to households under their responsibility and carried out visits and follow-up connections.

Congjia Village is located at the southeastern edge of Yuyang Town, close to Chenchang in Xiantao. It is a sandy hollow with little arable land per capita, a single cropping structure, low agricultural income, and soil that does not hold water. After thorough investigation by the Municipal Agriculture Bureau and the village committee and after seeking expert opinions, a new path of developing the vegetable industry to escape poverty and become prosperous was determined.

“Vegetable production is ‘embroidery work’; the labor intensity is not great, but it must be tended every day, and it is also suitable for older villagers and those with weak labor capacity……” At the recent village-wide meeting on connecting the development of the vegetable industry, the work team of the Municipal Agriculture Bureau invited experts from the Zhugentan Pengzhou Vegetable Cooperative and the Yingtian Vegetable Farmers Professional Cooperative of the Xiongkou Management District to pass on experience and knowledge to the villagers of Congjia Village, and in-depth exchanges and communication were carried out on greenhouse construction, agricultural input supply, production and sales contracts, technical services, and all other aspects. The person in charge of the Municipal Vegetable Office explained the vegetable production and sales situation, industry development trends, and the characteristics of vegetable production techniques.

Wu Lin, first secretary stationed in Congjia Village by the Qianjiang Municipal Agriculture Bureau, told reporters that at present the preparatory stage for building vegetable greenhouses is underway. Next, they will also develop open-field vegetables for certain areas. This will enable poor farming households to increase income through structural adjustment and the development of the vegetable industry, and accelerate the pace of poverty alleviation.
