[Lead·China Vegetable Network]Since mid-November last year, temperatures in our city dropped sharply, and coupled with continuous rain and snow, low temperatures and scant sunshine, this greatly affected vegetable production and transportation in our city, causing market vegetable prices to rise generally. According to the prices of 22 kinds of vegetables monitored by the price department at the end of November, 17 kinds rose compared with October, with an average increase of 35%.

From the sudden price rise in mid-November last year to the continued upward trend in December, vegetable prices began to show signs of falling back in 2016.

Since mid-November last year, temperatures in our city dropped sharply, and coupled with continuous rain and snow, low temperatures and scant sunshine, this greatly affected vegetable production and transportation in our city, causing market vegetable prices to rise generally. According to the prices of 22 kinds of vegetables monitored by the price department at the end of November, 17 kinds rose compared with October, with an average increase of 35%. Among them, spinach, cucumber, green beans, green pepper, Chinese chives, rapeseed, white eggplant and baby bok choy rose by more than 50. The highest market price per 500 grams of green beans, Chinese chives, cucumber and white eggplant was 9 yuan, 8 yuan, 7 yuan and 6 yuan, setting a record high for November prices in recent years.

Entering December 2015, vegetable prices continued to rise noticeably. According to the prices of 22 kinds of vegetables monitored, 16 kinds rose compared with the previous month, 5 kinds remained flat, and 1 kind fell. The average price rose by about 20%. Compared with the same period last year, the average rose by nearly 10%. The main reasons for the price rise are: first, in the early part of this winter, temperatures in our city were lower than in previous years, and there was also relatively more rain, snow, fog and haze, which was very unfavorable for the growth of greenhouse vegetables, and vegetable output dropped noticeably. Second, local vegetable supplies were relatively scarce, and vegetables brought in from outside increased the cost of vegetable prices.

A reporter visited the market yesterday and found that some vegetable varieties showed falling prices. For example, in mid-November last year, the highest market price per 500 grams of green beans, Chinese chives, cucumber and white eggplant was 9 yuan, 8 yuan, 7 yuan and 6 yuan. In December last year, when the market prices of white eggplant, Chinese chives and green beans were at their highest, they sold for 5 yuan, 8 yuan and 8 yuan per 500 grams respectively. The reporter learned yesterday when checking prices at Yonghong Market that the retail prices of fresh first-grade green beans, Chinese chives and cucumber were 6 yuan, 5 yuan and 5 yuan respectively. All were lower than in the last two months of last year. Industry analysis says the fall in vegetable prices is related to the warmer weather.
