Chives and fennel sell fast: Winter Solstice brings brisk sales at Tianjin vegetable markets
December 22 is the Winter Solstice, one of the 24 solar terms, and many residents are making dumplings at home. Reporters learned early in the morning from the agricultural wholesale market that since yesterday, the trading volume of vegetables used as the main dumpling fillings has clearly increased, but prices are not expensive.
"A few days ago, the wholesale price of chives rose as high as 9.4 yuan per kilogram (the same below), and yesterday it dropped to 8.6 yuan. A while ago the temperature was too low, and leafy vegetables are afraid of freezing, so the prices were a bit high. These past few days the weather has improved, and prices have fallen back," a vegetable vendor at the Tianjin Hongqi Agricultural and Fruit Wholesale Market told reporters. Another vendor told reporters that because today is the Winter Solstice, many families will make dumplings, so they stocked more filling vegetables such as chives, fennel and baby bok choy. According to market price monitoring, the price declines for chives, fennel, spinach, baby bok choy and leaf lettuce ranged from 4% to 10%. At the same time, the prices of curved green beans and green peppers rose, with curved green beans at 6 yuan per kilogram and green peppers at 5.4 yuan per kilogram. The prices of Chinese cabbage, cabbage, cucumber and tomato were stable, at 0.8 yuan, 1.2 yuan, 3.6 yuan and 5 yuan per kilogram respectively.
Reporters learned this morning from some large supermarkets that a new round of promotional activities begins today, with a three-day limited-time promotion on ground pork, hind elbow and premium pork belly priced at 7.8 yuan, 8.5 yuan and 12.8 yuan per 500 grams (the same below) respectively. In addition, leafy vegetables at 1.18 yuan and winter melon and onions at 0.99 yuan attracted many residents to come and buy. Sales staff said that today the supermarket specially prepared extra ground meat and vegetables related to making fillings, to meet residents' needs for making dumplings on the Winter Solstice.
