Vegetable prices in the urban area of Huai'an, Jiangsu Province rose modestly for a second consecutive week. Yesterday, monitoring data from the Municipal Price Monitoring Center showed that the average price of the 32 kinds of vegetables monitored in the urban area rose slightly by 0.7 percentage points last week, with the current price at about 3.5 yuan/500 grams. Judging from recent trends, affected by earlier rain and snow weather, vegetable prices in the urban area are currently in a relatively stable period after climbing to a high level.

According to monitoring, among the 32 kinds of vegetables in the urban area, 12 rose, 12 were flat and 8 fell. Although the situation still showed more rises than falls, the overall balance was more prominent, which also corresponds to the current overall stability of vegetable prices. In addition, the magnitude of price changes this period was also noticeably smaller, with only four varieties - celery, green peppers, garlic scapes and oyster mushrooms - rising or falling by more than 10 percentage points, while other varieties mostly fluctuated within a small range.

Specifically on prices, there are currently 14 varieties of vegetables priced at one to two yuan per 500 grams, the second-lowest number since October, only slightly more than the previous week. Among them, the “one-yuan vegetables” include 6 varieties: Chinese cabbage, white radish, cabbage, winter melon, yellow soybean sprouts and mung bean sprouts, with the number and varieties the same as the previous week. Vegetables priced at or above four yuan per 500 grams, however, reached as many as 13 varieties, accounting for 40 percent, namely cucumber (current price 4 yuan), green pepper (4 yuan), long beans (5.5 yuan), garlic scapes (4.8 yuan), Chinese chives (5 yuan), Chinese yam (4.1 yuan), broccoli (4.5 yuan), mushrooms (7.3 yuan), oyster mushrooms (4 yuan), loofah (5.5 yuan), edamame (5.8 yuan), garlic bulbs (5.4 yuan) and ginger (4.8 yuan). It can be seen that current vegetable prices are not only not cheap, but the room for choice is also relatively small.

“Overall, vegetable prices in the coming period will still mainly rise, but the increase will not be large.” A person in charge of the Municipal Price Monitoring Center believes that “mainly rise” is because vegetable prices are in a seasonal upward cycle, but constrained by factors such as oil prices, demand and inflation, vegetable prices cannot experience a major rise that “stands out alone,” unless extremely severe weather is encountered.
