A few days ago, at the thousand-mu vegetable base supplying Hong Kong, China and Macao, China run by the Fengshou Planting Professional Cooperative in Zhenjiang Village Committee, Zhenjiang Town, Gaozhou City, reporters saw more than a dozen workers packing freshly picked bitter melons and eggplants at the base. These vegetables were about to be transported to Shenzhen and then transshipped to Hong Kong, China and Macao, China.

According to the head of the Fengshou Planting Professional Cooperative, the base was established under a signed agreement in April this year. The base is close to County Road 632, with convenient transportation, flat terrain, fertile soil and convenient irrigation, making it suitable for large-scale contiguous development. The initial investment was more than 5 million yuan, with a contiguous planting area of 1,100 mu, including 900 mu in Hecun Dong and 200 mu in Yajing Dong. It follows a new path of agricultural development featuring mechanized farming, large-scale planting, standardized management and branded sales, and adheres to unified seed purchasing, unified seedling raising and unified technical guidance. It has long-term professors from the Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences as technical advisers, is equipped with green and environmentally friendly devices for trapping insects and flies, and consistently produces according to the standards for green, pollution-free vegetables. Most notably, the base introduces high-quality soil from Germany containing a weakly acidic black charcoal substrate for raising seedlings. The black charcoal substrate in this soil not only has a high organic matter content, but can also effectively eliminate pests and diseases as well as the harmful pesticide residues in the original soil. The first batch of vegetable seedlings at the base was planted in August this year, with varieties including bitter melon, pumpkin, eggplant, chili pepper, cauliflower and kailan heads. At present, the base has enjoyed a bumper harvest, producing about 20,000 jin of vegetables per day, with an expected peak of 40,000 jin. The products are mainly supplied to Hong Kong, China, Macao, China and other places.

According to Zou Zenan, secretary of the Zhenjiang Village Party branch, the establishment of the base has effectively raised the income of local farmers. Using the business model of “cooperative + base + farmers”, it provides technology and seedlings and has driven 860 surrounding farming households to take part in green, pollution-free vegetable planting, benefiting 4,700 people. The rent for land leased from the people is 850 yuan per mu per year (increasing by 10% every 5 years), directly benefiting 2,400 people. The base provides 200 jobs for local people, and the people earn no less than 80 yuan per day in labor income at the base.
