  • A new narcissus-petal cultivar of Cymbidium ensifolium, with tall flower scapes rising well above the leaves

Cymbidium ensifolium --- new narcissus type - tall scapes rising well above the leaves

  • What are the characteristics of the Xuri Hong (Rising Sun Red) Jianlan (Cymbidium ensifolium) cultivar?

August 2009, orchid enthusiasts Li Rongkai, Gao Quanzhong, and Zou Jianchao gathered at a friend's home in Rongding Town, Mabian County, Sichuan Province. A local orchid farmer surnamed Chen happened to mention that a pot of red-flowered Jianlan was in bloom in his home orchid shed; after the meal, the three went together to admire it: at the entrance of the shed, from afar they saw a red flower as delicate and brilliant as fire, dazzling and radiant, with a rich fragrance filling the air; looking closely, this pot had a total of 7 growths including the dragon root, with one flower spike bearing five blooms, held high above the leaves, a fully translucent red narcissus-petal type from all over Sichuan. Later, the three purchased all of them at a high price. According to the recollection of the orchid farmer surnamed Chen: this plant was collected in 2006 on a hillside in Rongding Town, with a dragon root and two seedlings brought down from the mountain. It has three to five leaves, leaf length 20--30cm, leaf width 0.6--0.8cm, leaf color tender green, with a soft arc shape. It first bloomed in early August 2008, and has rebloomed for three consecutive years, with inflorescences of 5--7 flowers; when open, the stem is green and the flower is bright red, soft petals, the outer petals and the inner petals are fully translucent red inside and out, dazzling and eye-catching, bright and vivid in color, the lip is red with distinct white spots and blocks, the flower form is dignified and generous, and after three bloomings, the color and form are quite stable; a bright red and purple narcissus-petal flower is truly a rare treasure. This plant currently has fewer than twenty growths; after discussion among several orchid enthusiasts, it was temporarily named "Xuri Hong" (Rising Sun Red), taking its color to symbolize the newly risen sun, radiant and shining, bestowing grace upon the earth.
