Fast-growing Chinese scholar tree (Sophora japonica) grows quickly and adapts well, making it a common and excellent landscaping tree species
The fast-growing Chinese scholar tree is a fast-growing type of Chinese scholar tree (Sophora japonica). It belongs to the Fabaceae family as a deciduous tree, and gets its name because its growth rate is noticeably faster than that of the ordinary Chinese scholar tree. While retaining the basic characteristics of the Chinese scholar tree, such as a well-formed shape and an open crown, it has a straighter trunk and a shorter timber-producing cycle, making it a commonly used landscaping and timber tree species in northern regions.
Compared with the ordinary Chinese scholar tree, the fast-growing Chinese scholar tree has a greater annual growth increment, with faster increases in tree height and diameter at breast height, especially during the seedling and young tree stages. It is drought-tolerant and cold-tolerant, has low soil requirements, can adapt to mildly saline-alkali land, and has a certain resistance to pollution, making it suitable for planting along urban roads and in industrial and mining areas.
The fast-growing Chinese scholar tree is mostly propagated by grafting, usually using ordinary Chinese scholar tree seedlings as rootstock, and obtaining stable-character nursery stock through bud grafting or branch grafting. During cultivation, attention should be paid to trunk training and pruning for shaping, cultivating a straight trunk, and ensuring water and fertilizer supply during the growing season, so that growth will be more vigorous.
In terms of application, the fast-growing Chinese scholar tree is mainly used for street trees, shade trees, and shelterbelt construction, and can also be cultivated as a timber tree species. Its crown is dense and provides good shade, and its summer flowers can also provide a nectar source for bees, combining ecological value with ornamental value. In addition, distinctive varieties such as the red-flowered Liaohong Huai have been bred within the Chinese scholar tree family, providing more choices for landscaping projects.
