Hazelnut production areas are mainly Turkey, Italy and Northeast China, among other regions.
Hazelnuts are the nuts of plants in the genus Corylus. The kernels are crisp and rich in oil, and they can be eaten directly as a snack or used as an important ingredient in foods such as chocolate and pastries. Hazelnut trees mostly grow in temperate regions and prefer a cool, humid climate and well-drained soil, so hazelnut production areas worldwide are largely concentrated in mid-latitude hilly and mountainous zones.
From a global perspective, Turkey is the world's foremost hazelnut production area. The mild, humid climate along its northern Black Sea coast is very suitable for hazelnut trees, and its output has long ranked first in the world. Italy is also a traditional hazelnut-producing country, and its hazelnuts are known for their rich kernel flavor. In addition, Oregon in the United States, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran and other places also have plantings of a certain scale.
China's hazelnut production areas are mainly distributed in Northeast and North China, with wild hazelnut forests or cultivated orchards in Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, as well as Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Shanxi and other places. The flat hazelnut abundantly produced in Northeast China has small nuts and thin shells with a rich aroma, while the Ping'ou hybrid hazelnut widely planted in Northeast China in recent years has large nuts and good yielding ability, driving the continuous expansion of domestic hazelnut production areas.
Production area conditions affect the flavor and taste of hazelnuts to a certain extent, and hazelnuts from production areas with a cool climate and large day-night temperature differences tend to be fuller and sweeter. When choosing hazelnuts, you can pay attention to the place-of-origin information on the packaging, then combine it with an overall judgment based on the plumpness, color and smell of the kernels, making it easier to buy products of better quality.
