The toad, commonly known as the warty toad, secretes a milky fluid from its parotoid glands and skin glands that can be processed into the traditional Chinese medicinal material known as toad venom (Chansu), while the shed outer skin is called toad skin (Chanyi); both are raw materials in traditional medicine. So-called toad farming means breeding and raising toads through artificial means and collecting products such as toad venom and toad skin from them, and it belongs to a category of specialty farming.

In terms of prospects, toad venom and toad skin have relatively stable demand in the Chinese medicinal materials market, while wild toad resources are protected and random collection is restricted, which leaves some room for artificial farming. In recent years the number of people paying attention to this field has gradually increased, but overall it remains a niche industry, and both the market scale and sales channels need to be assessed on the ground before any judgment is made; it is unwise to rely on only one side of the story.

Farming toads is not easy. Toads favor shady, damp environments, the tadpole stage requires clean water, and the adult stage mainly depends on live feed such as insects; site conditions, feed sources, and anti-escape and anti-pest measures all directly affect the survival rate. In addition, wild toads mostly belong to protected wildlife species, so relevant permits must be obtained in accordance with the law before carrying out artificial breeding, and wild individuals must not be captured privately to serve as breeding stock.

Overall, the prospects for toad farming are closely tied to three major factors: the market for medicinal materials, farming technology, and policy compliance. Those intending to enter the industry should first learn the basic techniques, understand local regulatory requirements, and secure sales channels in advance before deciding on the scale of investment, so as to avoid blindly launching a project after credulously believing high-return promotions.
