An introduction to the dragon: from its image and legends to its origins in farming culture
The dragon is the most representative mythical animal in traditional Chinese culture. Although it is not a real creature, it has played an important role in thousands of years of agrarian civilization. The ancients regarded the dragon as a deity that could summon clouds and bring rain and that governed floods and droughts. Therefore, in an agricultural society that depended on the heavens for its harvest, the image of the dragon appeared in temples, festivals and everyday objects, carrying people's hopes for a bountiful harvest.
As for the dragon's appearance, the ancients often summed it up by saying that its horns resemble a deer's, its head a camel's, its eyes a rabbit's, its body a snake's, its scales a fish's and its claws an eagle's, believing that the dragon combined the features of many animals. It can ride the clouds and mist and send down rain, and it is regarded as a symbol of auspiciousness and power. Emperors of successive dynasties honored the dragon, while ordinary people expressed their prayers for favorable weather through activities such as dragon dances and dragon boat races.
The relationship between the dragon and farming is especially close. The second day of the second lunar month is commonly known as Longtaitou, the day the dragon raises its head, and it is regarded as an important seasonal marker for spring plowing and preparations for farming. People believed that at this time the Dragon King awakened and rain became more frequent, making it a good time to arrange farm work. In the old days, when drought struck, many places also had the custom of praying to the Dragon King for rain, reflecting the agricultural society's deep dependence on rainwater.
In agriculture, many animals and plants are also named after the dragon, which can be seen as extended knowledge related to this entry. For example, longan and dragon fruit are common fruit trees, asparagus bean sprouts and black nightshade are edible vegetables, and lobster is a well-known species in aquaculture. Getting to know these agricultural products with the character for dragon in their names is also an interesting way to understand dragon culture from another angle.
