Parrot fish turning white is a common phenomenon when keeping blood parrot cichlids. It refers to the fish gradually losing its original bright red color, developing white or pale patches or uneven coloration. The parrot fish is an ornamental fish bred by crossbreeding cichlids, and its red color is mainly maintained by the deposition of pigments such as astaxanthin from its food, so fading is fairly common and in most cases can be improved through proper care.

There are several main causes of whitening. The first is stress response: when newly introduced to a tank, during large water changes, or when disturbed, the fish becomes tense and its body color temporarily fades, usually recovering on its own once it adapts to the environment. The second is water quality and water temperature problems: long-term exposure to high ammonia nitrogen, insufficient dissolved oxygen, or large fluctuations in water temperature will make the fish body turn white and reduce its vitality. The third is improper lighting: keeping the fish long-term in a dim corner or in direct sunlight both affect color display. The fourth is a monotonous diet lacking nutrition, especially natural pigment sources such as astaxanthin, causing the red color to slowly fade.

When dealing with this, start with the environment: keep water quality stable, change the water regularly but not in too large a volume each time, keep the water temperature as constant as possible, and reduce handling and disturbance. As for food, choose color-enhancing feeds containing spirulina and astaxanthin, and appropriately supplement with bloodworms, brine shrimp, and similar foods to help pigment deposition. At the same time, ensure moderate daily lighting and give the fish a quiet, stable living environment.

Note that if, besides turning white, the fish also shows symptoms such as gasping at the surface, rubbing against the tank, white spots, or fin rot, it may be caused by disease or parasites, and it should be isolated for observation and treated accordingly. As long as the cause is ruled out and you care for it patiently, most parrot fish will gradually regain their rosy red color.
