Fly farming refers to the production activity of raising fly insects under artificial conditions, and the species reared are mostly the house fly, the blow fly Chrysomya megacephala, the green bottle fly Lucilia sericata, and the black soldier fly, which is often grouped into this topic as well. The purpose of farming flies is usually not the adult flies themselves, but obtaining fast-growing larvae for producing protein feed or treating organic waste.

Fly larvae have a high protein content and also contain a certain amount of fat; after drying, degreasing and other processes they can be made into insect meal, serving as a protein source in feed for farmed animals such as aquatic species and poultry. At the same time, the larvae can feed on kitchen scraps, fruit and vegetable trimmings and livestock and poultry manure, converting waste into insect protein and organic fertilizer, which is why they have attracted attention in circular agriculture and the resource utilization of waste.

In actual production, farms mostly use enclosed buildings and shorten the breeding cycle by controlling temperature and humidity. During the adult stage, egg-laying substrates and supplemental feed such as sugar water need to be provided, while in the larval stage wheat bran, soybean residue or food waste are used as the culture medium. Daily management should pay attention to escape prevention, rodent control and personnel hygiene, to avoid the population escaping and causing environmental disturbance.

Unlike the flies people picture landing on garbage, properly farmed flies are bred in isolated environments, and the insect stock has been domesticated, so hygiene conditions are controllable. Those who intend to enter this industry also need to understand local regulations on insect farming, animal feed and waste treatment, and carry out production on the premise of compliance.
