The blood parrot cichlid is a common tropical ornamental fish, bred by crossbreeding cichlids such as the red devil and the redhead cichlid. It gets its name from its fiery red body color and its short, blunt mouth shaped like a parrot's beak, and among hobbyists it is also called the red fortune fish or fortune fish. It has a short, round body, a raised back, and a thick belly, and it sways as it swims; together with its festive red appearance, it has long been popular in the ornamental fish market.

In terms of variety types, those commonly seen on the market include the ordinary blood parrot, the Yuanbao parrot, and the King Kong parrot. The Yuanbao type has a higher back and a rounder body, while the King Kong type is larger in build and looks more imposing. Because the blood parrot cichlid is a hybrid variety, most individuals are difficult to breed naturally, and the ornamental individuals on the market are mainly obtained through artificial breeding.

When keeping blood parrot cichlids, the key is to keep the water temperature stable and the water clean. The suitable water temperature is generally around 25 to 28 degrees Celsius, and the temperature difference during water changes should not be too large. Its mouth structure is special, and its ability to breathe and compete for food is relatively weak, so the aquarium is best equipped with aeration equipment. For feeding, easy-to-swallow pellet feed can be chosen, and appropriately adding color-enhancing feed helps maintain its vivid body color.

In daily management, blood parrot cichlids occasionally develop problems such as faded body color and white spot disease, which are mostly related to water temperature fluctuations and deteriorating water quality; timely adjustments can usually restore them. When keeping them in a community tank, it is best to choose fish of similar size and gentle temperament, and avoid keeping them in the same tank with aggressive species. Overall, as long as the environment is stable and feeding is proper, the blood parrot cichlid is a relatively easy-to-start, highly ornamental fish species for home keeping.
