Racing pigeon breeding is the practice of raising pigeons that have a strong homing instinct; through daily management, selective breeding and flight training, breeders produce racing pigeons capable of long-distance flight and of returning accurately to the loft. Racing pigeons have strong memories, well-proportioned bodies and outstanding stamina; historically they were used to carry messages, and today they are kept mainly for racing competitions.

To breed racing pigeons, the first step is to build a good loft. The site should be sunny, dry, well ventilated and quiet, and the loft should be fitted with perches, nest boxes and an exercise area, and kept clean and hygienic. The feed consists mainly of grains and legumes such as corn, wheat, peas and sorghum, supplemented with health grit and plenty of clean drinking water to help the pigeons digest and absorb their food and to replenish minerals.

In daily management, disease prevention is crucial: vaccinate on schedule and disinfect the loft and equipment regularly to prevent common diseases such as Newcastle disease and pigeon pox. During the breeding season, pay attention to pairing and selection, choosing stock birds with clear bloodlines, robust builds and good racing performance in order to improve the overall quality of the offspring.

Training is an important part of racing pigeon breeding. Young pigeons must first become familiar with the loft environment, then undergo release training gradually progressing from short to long distances, to build up their sense of direction and flight endurance. After systematic training, racing pigeons can take part in races over various distances; pigeons with excellent results and good stock birds often have high economic value, so racing pigeon breeding is both a traditional hobby and a business that has gradually developed into a specialty farming venture.
