Gastrodia elata: Production Area Distribution and Characteristics of Major Domestic Producing Regions
Gastrodia elata is a perennial herbaceous plant in the orchid family, valued medicinally for its underground tubers, and is one of China's traditional precious medicinal materials. It has no green leaves and lacks a true root system; the nutrients it needs for growth are mainly obtained through symbiosis with Armillaria mellea, so its requirements for the growing environment are rather specific, and its production areas are relatively concentrated.
Gastrodia elata production areas are most concentrated in the mountainous regions of southwestern and central China. Yunnan is an important producing region, and the Gastrodia elata from the Zhaotong area, especially the dark-stemmed variety, is particularly well known; Guizhou's Dafang as well as Sichuan and Chongqing also have relatively large-scale cultivation. In addition, Hanzhong in Shaanxi, the mountainous areas of western Hubei, the Dabie Mountains on the border between Anhui and Hubei, and the Changbai Mountains in Jilin are all traditional producing areas for Gastrodia elata. Abroad, there is also a small amount of distribution in places such as Korea, Japan and Nepal.
Gastrodia elata prefers a cool and humid climate and mostly grows in forest land in mountainous areas at higher altitudes, generally requiring loose-textured, humus-rich sandy loam soil; excessively high summer temperatures are not conducive to tuber growth. Because wild resources are becoming increasingly scarce, most Gastrodia elata on the market today comes from artificial cultivation, with common methods including wild-simulated cultivation under forest and propagation using fungal wood.
Gastrodia elata from different producing areas differs to some extent in size, color and content of active ingredients, and the Gastrodia elata produced in high-altitude mountainous areas is generally more recognized by the market for its quality. When purchasing, you can pay attention to the place-of-origin information and at the same time make a comprehensive judgment based on characteristics such as the plumpness of the tuber and the texture of the cut surface.
