Specialty breeding is short for specialty animal breeding, referring to the artificial raising of special animals with relatively high economic value, whose products can be used for fur, medicinal purposes, food or ornamental purposes. Compared with traditional farming of pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens and the like, the targets of specialty breeding are relatively niche, but their products often have unique selling points, and the market space also has more potential.

In terms of types, specialty breeding can be roughly divided into several categories: one is fur-bearing animals, such as foxes and minks, which mainly produce pelts; one is medicinal animals, such as deer and scorpions, whose products can be used in medicine or as health-care raw materials; and there are also specialty meat animals, such as meat donkeys, ostriches and ring-necked pheasants. In recent years, meat donkey farming has been regarded by many places as a new money-making project in the specialty breeding industry. In addition, ornamental pet species and specialty aquatic species are also common categories of specialty breeding.

Specialty breeding has relatively large profit potential, but it also has high technical requirements. Different animals have their own particularities in feed ratios, pen and housing environments, temperature and humidity control and disease prevention and control. Breeders had best first master basic rearing techniques, then gradually expand the scale, and keep good daily epidemic prevention and management records to reduce breeding risks.

It should be noted that some specialty breeding animals are protected animals or require relevant permits to be processed. Before introducing stock, one should first understand local policy requirements. At the same time, the market capacity for specialty breeding is relatively limited, and price fluctuations are quite obvious. It is advisable to carefully choose species based on local resource conditions and sales channels, and avoid blindly following trends and launching projects.
