Swimming crab farming is a form of marine aquaculture focused mainly on the swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus) and similar species, and it is fairly common in China's coastal areas. Swimming crabs grow quickly, have tender flesh and are well accepted by the market, making them one of the important aquaculture projects for coastal farmers.

Common farming methods include pond culture, cage culture and indoor industrialized farming. Among these, pond culture is the most widespread; sites are usually chosen near sea areas with convenient water intake and drainage, and the crabs can be raised alone or polycultured with shrimp, shellfish and fish to improve pond use efficiency.

During the farming process, seed quality and water quality management are key links. Before stocking, the pond is generally cleared and disinfected, and after filling with water the salinity and water temperature are adjusted to keep the water fresh and clear with sufficient dissolved oxygen. The feed is mainly low-value trash fish and compound feed, with feeding carried out at fixed times and in fixed amounts to avoid leftover feed accumulating and spoiling the water quality.

During molting, swimming crabs are easily attacked by their own kind, so netting, tiles and other hiding structures can be placed in the pond to help raise the survival rate. In daily management, the crabs' activity and feeding status should also be observed, with disease prevention and water quality monitoring done well, and management measures adjusted promptly when abnormalities are found.

After several months of careful rearing, they can be harvested and marketed successively in autumn. In recent years, some farmers have also tried new models such as ecological polyculture and low-density healthy farming, moving swimming crab farming toward a greener and more sustainable direction.
