Introduction to the Plant Characteristics and Medicinal Benefits of Abacus Plant
Abacus plant (Glochidion puberum) is a deciduous shrub in the genus Glochidion of the family Euphorbiaceae. It gets its name because its fruit is flat and round with longitudinal ridges on the surface, closely resembling an abacus bead. It is fairly common in the southern provinces of China, mostly growing wild on hillsides, roadsides, forest edges and in thickets, with strong adaptability to the environment.
The plant is generally 1 to 3 m tall, and the branchlets are often covered with short soft hairs. The leaves are alternate, oblong or obovate-oblong, green on the upper surface and slightly paler beneath. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, mostly yellow-green, and often clustered in the leaf axils; the fruit is a flattened spherical capsule, red or reddish-brown when ripe, with several longitudinal grooves on the top surface. They hang in clusters along the branches, looking like little abacus beads, which gives them considerable ornamental appeal.
There are many species in the genus Glochidion. Besides the common abacus plant, there are also closely related species such as Glochidion eriocarpum and Glochidion wrightii. They are rather similar in morphology, and in folk usage across different regions, species with similar appearances are often collectively referred to and used as abacus plant.
In terms of application, the roots, stems and leaves of the abacus plant can all be used as medicine. Traditionally it is believed to clear heat and drain dampness, invigorate the blood and remove toxins. In folk practice it is often decocted in water or pounded and applied externally to relieve discomfort such as dysentery, cold with fever, and traumatic injuries. In addition, this type of plant has a fairly developed root system and tolerates poor soil, so it is also often used for greening barren slopes and for soil and water conservation.
It should be noted that, as a medicinal plant, the abacus plant should be used in controlled amounts. Pregnant women and people with special constitutions should treat it with caution, and it is best used under the guidance of a professional physician to avoid adverse reactions.
