Pine Nut Production Regions: Main Growing Areas and Variety Characteristics
Pine nuts are the seeds of trees in the Pinaceae family, also known as pine seeds or sea pine nuts. The commonly eaten pine nuts mainly come from Korean pine, Armand pine, Yunnan pine and other tree species. In China, the Northeast is the best-known pine nut production region, with the Changbai Mountain area and the Lesser Khingan Mountains in Heilongjiang and Jilin producing abundant Korean pine nuts that are plump and rich in pine aroma, and Liaoning also has some output.
Besides the Northeast, the Southwest and Northwest are also important production regions. Yunnan pine and Armand pine are widely distributed, Yunnan is the main pine nut production region in the Southwest, and Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Sichuan and other places also produce Armand pine nuts. Xinjiang produces local pine nuts, while what the market often calls Brazilian pine nuts are actually mostly produced in the Pakistan and Afghanistan area. Foreign production regions also include the Russian Far East and the Korean Peninsula and other areas where Korean pine grows, while the Mediterranean coast is better known for stone pine nuts.
The natural conditions of a production region greatly affect pine nut quality. Pine trees mostly grow in cool mountainous areas with large day-night temperature differences, which is favorable for the accumulation of oils and nutrients; pine trees have a long fruiting cycle, and pine nuts take a long time from flowering to maturity, with harvesting mostly concentrated in autumn and only reaching the market after steps such as knocking down cones, sun-drying, threshing and shelling. Pine nuts from different production regions each have their own characteristics in shell thickness, grain size and flavor.
Pine nuts are rich in oils and protein, can be eaten directly as nuts, are also often used in pastries and dishes, and can also be used to press oil. When buying, pay attention to the production region information and choose suitable varieties according to use; when storing, keep them sealed, away from light and moisture-proof to avoid oils oxidizing and producing off-flavors.
