Beef cattle breeds refer to types of cattle developed through long-term selective breeding with beef production as the primary purpose. Compared with dairy cattle or draft cattle, beef cattle generally grow faster, have good meat-producing performance and better meat quality, and are an important foundation for the development of the beef cattle industry, as well as the aspect farmers care about most when choosing breeding stock.

In terms of origin and use, beef cattle breeds can be broadly divided into three categories: specialized beef cattle breeds, dual-purpose dairy-and-beef breeds, and local yellow cattle breeds. Specialized beef cattle breeds such as Angus, Hereford, Charolais and Limousin have outstanding meat-producing performance; Simmental, meanwhile, is a typical dual-purpose dairy-and-beef type with strong adaptability and wide uses, and is raised in many regions.

Local yellow cattle breed resources are likewise abundant in various regions, for example Qinchuan cattle, Luxi cattle and Yanbian cattle, which generally have the advantages of tolerance to coarse feed and good stress resistance, and whose meat flavor is also recognized by consumers. However, the growth rate and meat yield of local breeds are generally not as good as those of specialized beef cattle, so in actual production, introduced breeds are often crossbred with local cows so that the offspring combine adaptability and meat-producing performance.

When choosing beef cattle breeds, local climate, feed resources, market demand and farming model should be comprehensively considered. The breeds suited to hot and humid regions differ from those suited to cool regions, and self-breeding and raising versus buying feeder cattle for fattening also have different breed requirements. Only by choosing the right breed and combining it with good feeding management can the growth potential of beef cattle be fully brought out and more stable farming profits be achieved.
