Cordyceps sinensis is an entomopathogenic fungus that parasitizes the larvae of ghost moths. Wild specimens are mainly produced in high-altitude meadow regions such as Qinghai, Tibet, Sichuan, and Yunnan. Artificial cultivation of Cordyceps sinensis refers to simulating natural elements such as the low temperatures of the plateau and host insects under controlled conditions, allowing the Cordyceps fungus to complete the entire process of infecting the larvae and growing fruiting bodies.

The cultivation difficulties are mainly concentrated in two aspects: the environment and the host. The Cordyceps fungus has strict requirements for temperature, humidity, and light, and ghost moth larvae need to be reared in a low-temperature environment for a relatively long time before they can be successfully infected, resulting in a long production cycle and a high technical threshold. Therefore, current efforts are still mainly explorations by research institutions and small-scale bases, and there are not many products on the market that achieve stable mass production.

Related products can be roughly divided into three categories: first, cultivated Cordyceps sinensis produced by recreating wild conditions as closely as possible; second, mycelium powder made by fermenting Cordyceps mycelium, commonly found in deeply processed products; third, Cordyceps militaris, commonly known as cordyceps flower, which is another fungal species that can be cultivated on a large scale and is not Cordyceps sinensis in the strict sense.

From the perspective of application, artificial cultivation can, on the one hand, reduce the pressure of harvesting wild resources, and on the other hand, provide consumers with more diverse choices. When purchasing, it is advisable to check clearly the fungal species and category indicated on the product label, distinguish between Cordyceps sinensis and cordyceps flower, remain rational about claims regarding efficacy, and simply choose according to one's own needs.
