The Art of Naming: What Makes a Good Name in Sound, Form and Meaning
The art of naming, put plainly, is the knowledge of how to give something a suitable name. A name seems simple, but in fact it involves pronunciation, character form, meaning and many other aspects, which is what people usually call sound, form and meaning. Whether you are naming a farm, an agricultural product, a seed shop or a livestock farm, none of these basic principles can be avoided.
A name must first roll off the tongue, with syllables that fit together smoothly, avoiding awkward characters and polyphonic characters that cause ambiguity. Second, the meaning should be clear, and it is best if it reflects the features of the thing, for example including the place of origin, variety or taste characteristics in an agricultural product name, so that people can roughly understand it at a glance. The character form should also be easy to write and recognise; although rare characters may seem distinctive, they make it easy for people to be unable to read or remember them.
In agriculture, the art of naming is widely applied. When naming a family farm, people often combine the surname, place name and type of business; when registering a brand for an agricultural product, they need to consider whether it spreads easily and whether it can highlight quality; even when naming the pigs, cattle, sheep, cats and dogs at home, people who have kept them for a long time care about a name that is friendly and easy to call. When a name is well chosen, reputation and returning customers are both easier to build up.
One thing to bear in mind is that naming should not blindly pursue novelty, and even less should it imitate the fame of someone else's existing brand, so as to avoid disputes. Before formal use, you can first check whether the name is already taken, and when brand operation is involved, you should also consider registration and protection. Once the name is settled, what it ultimately relies on is still solid products and services; a good name is only the icing on the cake.
